Course Overview:

This Basic Safety Course will enable students to support and care for themselves and others working in the several industries such as the construction, industry and resources and electrical sectors in particular by possessing the knowledge and skills of first aid, working at heights, manual handling, fire awareness and in case of an emergency, to be able to evacuate, rescue and provide appropriate first aid to casualties. For example, this course set is an industry minimum requirement before accessing a wind turbine tower.

Entry Requirements:

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including two (2) minutes of CPR as well as manual handling in the rescue of a mock casualty
  • Psychological and physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstrations for this course, such as the undertaking of the requirements to work safely at heights wearing appropriate PPE and using appropriate fall protection equipment. Participants will need sufficient physical ability to lift equipment infrequently from ground to overhead and access heights above 2m.
  • Capable of working under supervision in a team while being physically able to complete individual tasks relating to a rescue, autonomously, in a range of simulated and real locations
  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment.
  • Language, literacy and numeracy requirements – students must be able to read and correctly interpret required documentation relevant to working at height, speak clearly and unambiguously in English, explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues and understand the risk assessment requirements. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports. Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly calculate total fall distances for example.

Assessment Requirements:

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Certificate provided on completion of both –  nil recognition can be given if you fail to complete one or both tasks.

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

    • Working at heights scenarios – brittle surface & flat surface
    • Simulated rescue operation scenarios – vertical & confined space rescues
    • Movement tasks – horizontal, high to low & low to high
    • CPR (adult and infant)
    • Medical, trauma & environmental scenarios – anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, non-life-threatening bleeds, nosebleed, fractures and dislocations, sprains and strains & envenomation
    • Conduct electrical work tasks – uneven surface & access via ladder
    • Removed an electric shock casualty from a live electrical situation on two (2) occasions
    • Respond to a fire emergency 
    • Demonstrated correct use of equipment – small flammable liquid fire, metallic fire & fire hose reel
    • Inspection and placement of rescue equipment
    • Low voltage panel rescue
